Following is the text of a statement dated Nov. 21, 2009, issued by the Middletown City School District Board of Education:

To the Editor of the Middletown Journal,

The Board of Education of the Middletown City School District takes the selection of the new Superintendent very seriously and respects the significant impact the decision will have for our schools and city. Toward that end, the Board has hired a nationally recognized search consultant who is actively recruiting throughout the United States.

Many candidates for superintendent submitted their resumes to the search consultant with the understanding that their interest in the position would remain confidential in the early stages of the process. In order to not reduce the candidate pool and to maximize the probability of finding the best candidates, the Board will respect the privacy of the candidates at this time. Once a list of finalists is determined, the candidates will be disclosed and the public will have an opportunity to participate.

The Board is very encouraged by the strength of the initial candidate pool as reported on by the search consultant.

Sincerely,

Gregory Tyus
