Blind snack bar operator puts trust in others

HAMILTON — Judy Good makes it look easy. All she needed, she said, was a loan from the state and a lot of help from God.
Good runs Judy’s Snack Bar in the Government Services Center in Hamilton, where county and city employees and people waiting for court can pick up a sandwich, snacks or a drink for cheap.
She is also completely blind.
The challenges are obvious: Good has to ask people what type of food they are holding, or what denomination of money they are trying to use.
“I’ve had some problems with people not wanting to be honest with you about the money, that kind of thing,” she said. And she can usually tell when they are lying.
“They’re rather uneasy about what they’re telling you they have,” she said. But she doesn’t hold it against them.
“I just feel like if they need to do that, they probably need the money worse than I do.”
Good is a proud Christian, and sits on the administrative board and other committees of the Park Avenue Methodist Church.
“She is just an inspiration,” said Pastor Barbara Dafler. Not just because of overcoming her disability, Dafler said but also because, “she loves life and lives it to the fullest.”
Good has run the county’s concession stand at various buildings for 35 years. Along the way, many people have gotten more than just a soda or bag of chips when they stopped by.
“There’s been a few people who came in with children and evidently they had some kind of handicap, (and said), ‘See, you can deal with anything that you have, you can make do with it,” she said. “If people can carry something away from what I do, that would make me really happy.”

This is the type of self-reliance that our Republic was founded upon. I just hope the "ever vigilant" ACLU doesn't take offense that Judy is such a strong example of (Judeo-Christian) values and seeks to remove her from public buildings. Would not surprise me as we have fallen so far in our work ethic and public values in just ver 200 years. I suppose that's what technology and activist courts will do for you.
