MIDDLETOWN — The first black head coach in Cincinnati professional sports history will be the guest speaker next month at Miami University Middletown.
Marvin Lewis, who has compiled a 56-55-1 record for the Cincinnati Bengals since 2003, will speak at 7 p.m. Feb. 10 at Dave Finkelman Auditorium as part of the university’s celebration of Black History Month.
Miami Middletown Director of Advancement Susan Armacost said the university wanted to “appeal to a wide array of interests and tastes.”
Lewis’ lecture, she said, joins theater, comedy and music to give everyone “a reason to attend at least one performance” of the lecture series.
The series also includes Playhouse in the Park’s “Cyrano” on Feb. 5, comedian Norm McDonald on March 27 and country star Marty Stuart on May 8. Miami Middletown Interim Dean Jeanne Hey said the university is “thrilled” to be bring Lewis to Middletown.
“He is respected and admired by so many, both in and out of the world of football,” Hey said.
Lewis, who guided the Bengals to a 10-7 record and their first playoff appearance since 2005, was named the league’s Coach of the Year. He is the first Bengals coach to win the award since Paul Brown in 1970.
