Area agencies and charities are continuing to collect money and medical supplies for those impacted by the earthquake that struck Haiti.

From Cincinnati to Carlisle, from the American Red Cross to local school districts, people are responding to the needs of the estimated 3 million Haitians who need relief from the earthquake that hit Port-Au-Prince, Haiti on Tuesday, Jan. 12.

to help with disaster relief

Those who attend the West Chester/Liberty Twp. observance of Martin Luther King Day are being asked to make donations for disaster relief in Haiti, both at the luncheon following the March for Unity at 12:30 p.m. at West Chester Presbyterian Church and at the evening program at 7 p.m. at Cornerstone United Methodist Church.

The group is working in conjunction with the organizations Kids Against Hunger and the Matthew 25 Ministries.

In Mason, schools will participate in a Haiti Relief Project beginning Tuesday Jan. 19 through Jan. 22.

The project will support the efforts of Matthew 25 Ministries, a local non-profit organization that is providing international humanitarian disaster relief the to people of Haiti.

Students, staff, and residents are encouraged to drop off canned and nonperishable food, personal care products, cleaning products and first-aid supplies, at the collection bins at each school building and Central Office.

Hope for Haiti needs

funds to assist effort

Hope for Haiti’s Children, a Cincinnati-based non-profit organization, is seeking funds to help with the relief effort in Haiti.

Its Haiti-based team is in the city assessing needs and providing relief to those affected by the earthquake. HFHC plans to deliver medical supplies, water, food, and eventually help to rebuild homes and schools.

In addition, HFHC supports the Family Memorial Medical Clinic just outside of Port-au-Prince.

Donations can be given online at www.hopeforhaitischildren.org. All contributions are tax deductible.

American Red Cross

releases $10 million

With estimates that as many as three million people may be affected by the catastrophic earthquake that hit Haiti Tuesday, the American Red Cross is releasing an additional $9 million for earthquake relief, bringing its total commitment to $10 million to support relief efforts in Haiti.

Priority needs in Haiti are food, water, temporary shelter, medical services and emotional support.

As soon as airports begin accepting relief shipments, tarps, hygiene items and cooking sets for approximately 5,000 families will come from the Red Cross warehouse in Panama.

The International Committee of the Red Cross has a plane of mostly medical items on the way to Haiti from Geneva.

Other Red Cross partners have deployed a mobile hospital, medical teams, and 40 staff to help with sheltering, providing water, sanitation, and telecommunications.

ICRC is helping reconnect separated families in Haiti through the family link website www.icrc.org/familylinks which enables people in Haiti and outside the country to search for and register the names of relatives missing since the earthquake.

Since Tuesday, more than 14,000 people have been registered.

The best way to assist those in Haiti is to make a donation to the American Red Cross International Response Fund by going to www.cincinnatiredcross.org or by calling (800) RED-CROSS.

In addition, several hundred thousand people have chosen to make a mobile donation. Donors can text “Haiti” to 90999 on their cell phone to send a $10 donation to support Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti. The mobile giving effort raised more than $8 million by Friday morning, and all money raised goes to support Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti.
