MADISON TWP. — By this time next year, Madison Twp. residents will be able to travel back in time 200 years without leaving the township.

But members of the Historical Society of Madison Twp. need help to make that vision come true.

The historical society is seeking donations to transform a 200-year-old log cabin into a museum complete with period furnishings.

“It’s pretty rare to find a two-story log cabin of this quality. Usually by 200 years, it’s pretty disintegrated,” said Donna Walter of the historical society.

The cabin, which was donated to the society by the Blanton family from a farm off Hinkle Road, has been preserved by siding that has covered the original structure.

Walter said it is unusual to find a cabin of this quality and many cities go miles to find such structures.

“To find one that’s actually a Madison Twp. log cabin is pretty unique,” she said.

The structure has already been disassembled and will be rebuilt in the community park off West Alexandria Road after enough money, supplies or free labor are donated.

Walter said the historical society hopes to have the cabin museum up and running by May 2010 in time for the township’s bicentennial celebration.

They plan to open the museum every Sunday through the summer and at other times for school tours to go along with their Ohio history curriculum.

Walter said the historical society must first get funding or free labor for a roof before the project can move forward.

They will also be seeking furnishings from the period.

To donate, contact Walter or Mark Whiteman at (513) 422-8993.

Let us know here in Middletown how this goes as we still need to get our city leaders to repair the vault at the Pioneer Cemetery. Hope you're more successful than we have been so far.
