MONROE — The magistrate of Monroe’s Mayor’s Court will earn $4,500 more per year to match his increased workload, city officials decided this week.
Under the agreement effective Jan. 1, 2010, Jonathon Nerenberg will be paid $12,000 annually, compared to his previous salary of $7,500.
Rebecca Rosenbalm, the city’s clerk of courts, said Nerenberg’s case load has nearly doubled since 2002-03.
During those years, he handled an estimated 50 to 60 cases per court session compared to the current record of 85-100 per court session.
“After 10 years, I think a raise is appropriate and I think what I’ve done to bring court costs and fines closer to what other courts are doing, plus what other magistrates are making, I think that is a fair amount,” Nerenberg said.
He increased the court costs to help cover the costs for clerks and police officers, he said.
Nerenberg also increased fines to be more current with other neighboring courts.
Monroe’s Mayor’s Court is conducted on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month prior to City Council meetings, which begin at 6:30 p.m. Nerenberg recently moved the court’s start time to 3 p.m. to accommodate his increasing case load.
