MIDDLETOWN — An anonymous donation to Middletown Family Services means that 300 families will receive Thanksgiving food baskets this year.
Maurice Maxwell, agency director, said they were 150 sponsors short for eligible families that registered for baskets before the donation came in Thursday, Nov. 19.
Sherry Murphy, pantry manager, said the baskets include a bag of potatoes, instant potatoes, stuffing, carrots, cabbage, black-eyed peas, macaroni and cheese, apples and apple sauce, dinner rolls, powdered milk, gravy, pie and a turkey, in quantities appropriate for the family’s size, so local families can have a complete Thanksgiving dinner.
“I feel blessed,” said Jennifer Bailey, a participant whose husband has been laid off from his construction job. Bailey said the family of five, which also participated in the program last year, plans to spend the holiday at home.
The local unemployment rate is high and the economy has yet to rebound, “but even in a time like this people have stepped up,” Maxwell said.
