HAMILTON — Dog owners are advised to purchase 2011 dog licenses for their pets now before the $14 fee doubles.

The Butler County Auditor’s Office has mailed renewal forms to approximately 30,000 county residents who registered 37,874 dogs in 2010.

The renewal period for the licenses, which went on sale Wednesday, extends through the end of January. After Jan. 31, a state-imposed late fee will double the cost of the tag to $28.

Ohio law mandates all dogs, beginning at three months of age, be licensed. Animals found without licenses can be impounded.

The 2011 dog licenses are available for purchase at the Butler County Auditor’s Office on the fourth floor of the county Administration Building, 130 High St., or online at www.butlercountyauditor.org.

Dog tags also can be purchased at more than 50 locations across the county. The complete list of agents is available on the auditor’s website.

County residents who received a renewal notice who no longer own a dog may disregard the form. Mailed renewals postmarked by Jan. 31 will not be considered late, according to the auditor’s office.
