WILMINGTON — In an area that was economically devastated by 8,000 job losses when DHL closed its express cargo delivery hub, employees of a company with remaining operations there have pledged more than $31,000 for charities this year.

The employees are with ABX Air, Airborne Maintenance & Engineering Services and ABX Equipment and Facility Services. They operate as part of Air Transport Services Group Inc. and are based at Wilmington Air Park, the former DHL hub.

Benefactors of the charitable giving include the American Cancer Society ($12,000), American Heart Association ($6,000) and United Way of Clinton County ($7,000). Teamsters Union Local 1224, representing ABX Air pilots including those who lost their jobs after DHL reduced the air cargo transport services that ABX provided, sent a $4,000 donation to United Way and Air Transport Services Group gave a corporate donation of $10,000.

DHL’s job cuts and eventual shutdown of the Wilmington hub in 2008 and 2009 decimated what had been the Wilmington region’s largest employer, including workers that commuted daily from the Dayton, Cincinnati and Columbus areas.
