FAMILY FUN

Places to get real Christmas trees

By Pamela Dillon

For families that put up Christmas trees, sometimes a little chill develops in the air in the debate of real vs. fake. But if your family has already voted for those that don’t last as long but smell the best, here are a few of the larger Christmas tree farms in the area:

Young’s Jersey Dairy, 6880 Springfield-Xenia Road, just north Yellow Springs

(937) 767-7288, www.youngsdairy.com

This is the last weekend to choose and cut your own Christmas tree: Scotch Pine, White Pine, Southwestern White Pine, Canaan Fir and Blue Spruce. Young’s also has live potted Blue Spruce trees if you want to spruce up your own yard for years to come. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Sunday, Dec. 16.

There is complimentary hot chocolate and popcorn. If you’re hungry, there’s also the Golden Jersey Inn for meals and the Dairy Store for ice cream.

Country Pines Tree Farm, 8280 W. Third St., New Lebanon

(937) 835-3464, www.christmas-tree.com/real/oh/countrypines

With 90 acres of trees, a centuries-old barn/stone house and a custom greenery, this could become an annual destination for your family’s Christmas tree hunt.

Kids will scramble to see the donkeys in the barn: Rosa, Jack and Eeyore. Choose from: Scotch Pine, White Pine, Austrian Pine, and White Spruce to cut; Scotch Pine, White Pine, Douglas Fir, Fraser Fir, and Concolor Firs pre-cut. Also available are some live trees for replanting. Refreshments on the weekends include hot chocolate, donuts, hot cidae, hot dogs and chips. Open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

“We have added Noble Firs to our pre-cut selection this year,” said co-owner David Rench.

Big Tree Plantation, 2544 S. Waynesville Road, Morrow

(513) 836-0975, www.bigtreeplantation.com

“Nighttime Christmas Adventure” Friday, Dec. 14, until 9 p.m.

Part of the field will be lit; the gift shop will be open and the cafe will offer pizza, chili and funnel cakes. Extra attractions include a Winter Wonderland, Santa, wagon rides, a Nativity and bonfire. There is complimentary hot chocolate.

Big Tree is home to the 2011 Ohio State Fair Grand Champion Christmas Tree. Trees available: Canaan Fir, White Pine, Scotch Pine, Colorado Blue Spruce, Fraser Fir, Douglas Fir, and Norway Spruce. Regular hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays through Dec. 23.
