Swan song: Okay Lindon releases final album

By Donald Thrasher

Dustin Smith is an admitted perfectionist. As the leader of Okay Lindon, the Hamilton-based musician is known for taking his time meticulously crafting his pop-rock confections. However, as Smith admitted recently, he never imagined it would take him two years to complete his new album, “Everything Will Work Out Fine.”

The album gets its official release at Blind Bob’s on Friday, when Okay Lindon plays its final show.

“It was really nice because this was the first record where everyone that’s been playing with me was involved with every song but it took a lot more time than I wanted,” Smith said. “It’s my fault, really, because I tend to be a control freak but a lot of the guys work second shift.

“It took so long because of our schedules and because we’re pulling guys together from 90 miles between Walden, Ky., and Dayton, Ohio and getting them to my house to record,” he added. “It’s hard to get everything together.”

Okay Lindon is rounded out by Charles Smith (guitar), David Thomas (bass), Eric Miller (lead guitar) and Jordan Elam (drums).

“We do it all pretty much individually, so I was there with each person for all the drum tracks, the first guitar tracks and the second guitar tracks, so it took a while,” Smith said. “We’ve got some really cool things done, but I really worked myself to death on this one.”

“Everything Will Work Out Fine” is the group’s third full-length and best album yet. However, because of the labor-intensive nature of the band’s recording process Smith has decided this will be Okay Lindon’s final release. It is available for free digital download at www.okaylindon.bandcamp.com.

“In total I’ve been recording songs under that name for nine years now, so I just want to look for some time off and a fresh start,” he said. “I’m going to try to get more involved with helping out my friends with some of their records and give some support to some of the guys that have been playing for me for a long time.

“Recording is more of my forte than playing guitar, and I have the equipment and stuff to record it,” Smith said. “Those guys have been so great with helping me, so it will be a good time to help them out. I’ll definitely still be playing music. I have no intention of stopping, but I need to find a new way to make music.”

Friday’s show openers are Jesse Remnant and Handsome Jordan Elam Plus Three.
