November is proving to be an exciting month for Dayton film-making.

Last weekend, cheering audiences at the Dayton Art Institute stood to embrace “Sparkle,” the locally-produced documentary by Yellow Springs filmmakers Julia Reichert and Steve Bognar that chronicles the courage and resilience of 50-year-old dancer Sheri “Sparkle” Williams. A number of Wright State University film students worked on the production, which had its regional premiere at the Dayton Contemporary Dancer Theater’s gala evening Nov. 2 and was repeated Sunday afternoon, Nov. 3.

Jennifer Lawson, senior vice president of television and digital content at the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), took the stage to announce that the award-winning documentary will air nationally on PBS in prime time at 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7.

This weekend marks the regional premiere of “True Nature,” a supernatural thriller made by a team of local filmmakers, Patrick Steele and Ann Rotolante. Filmed entirely in the Miami Valley, the movie has been showing at film festivals around the world and is currently playing at The Neon in downtown Dayton. It has garnered a number of awards and will run through Thursday, Nov. 15.

This Wednesday night, “Take Us Home,” an ambitious undertaking produced and narrated by Aileen LeBlanc of Yellow Springs, will have its regional premiere at the Dayton Art Institute.

The inspiring and heart-wrenching documentary — six years in the making — was filmed in Ethiopia and Israel by a local crew and features original music by Sandy and Michael Bashaw. The film, which received funding from the Levin Foundation, examines the plight of Ethiopian Jews who long to return to Jerusalem.

“This is a great month for showcasing local film talent,” FilmDayton’s executive director Megan Cooper said. “The local premieres of ‘Sparkle,’ ‘True Nature’ and ‘Take Us Home’ show the diversity and the talent of our film community. All very different films — shorts and full-lengths, fiction and nonfiction — but all come from here in Dayton and have represented our community in a great way on the national and even international stage.”
