Dance show at Fitton will include long-distance duets

The Demetrius Klein Company will utilize Facebook and other tech tools.

By Corey Gibson

The Demetrius Klein Dance Company has been captivating audiences all over America since 1987. In 2009 Klein relocated his dance company back to his hometown of Hamilton. And on Saturday The Fitton Center for Creative Arts will be hosting a spectacular night of dance by Klein’s dance company.

The Demetrius Klein Dance Company will be performing two different dances, a world premiere and an old favorite.

The world premiere of “see through house” will integrate solos and duets using long-distance means such as Facebook, Skype and Tumblr. Professional dancers from Chicago, Columbus, Cincinnati and more, will perform the piece to the music of New York based composer Nicholas Klein.

“Demetrius works with people with homebases all over the country,” said Jennifer Acus-Smith, the educational coordinator for the center. “So they record videos and he transmits choreography to them that way and watches them. It is an interesting exchange.”

The company will also present Handel’s “Messiah,” a large-scale community-based work that uses the chorus and arias from the famous Handel score.

And “Messiah” is not to be missed. The dance, a lifelong project for Klien, began making the first of the dances to be performed on the stage as far back as 1988. “Messiah” aims to celebrate the joys of life, community and the awesome scope of Handel’s musical composition.

“Messiah will incorporate all different ages, from 3-year-olds to adults,” said Jennifer. “It is a community piece with a lot of collaboration with local dancers.”

The distinct dance styles performed by the Demetrius Klein Dance Company have brought praise nationally and internationally. Klein has presented more than 80 works on stages of major venues around the world.
