Children’s theatre presents “The Sword in the Stone”

By Corey Gibson

Contributing Writer

The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati, along with Art Reach, will be presenting the classic tale of King Arthur in its adaptation of “The Sword and the Stone,” starting Sept. 28.

Art Reach, a part of The Children’s Theatre, brings high-quality theater productions and workshops to different schools or venues to help increase awareness of the arts for students and family members.

The same four actors perform all the shows, traveling for a few months around the tri-state area performing at libraries, schools, community centers and many other established theatres.

“The actors usually travel an eight hour radius,” said Chris Stewart, Art Reach Coordinator and writer and director of the play, “but we have also done shows on the East Coast, and we are also going to Wisconsin.”

For “The Sword and the Stone,” audience members will be taken on a journey through medieval England as they meet the mysterious and magical Merlin, played by Cameron Jamarr Davis, a recent graduate of the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. Merlin helps a young Arthur, or Wart as everyone calls him in the play, discover the real magic he needs to become the rightful King of England.

The actor playing Arthur is Jordan Egan, a student at Northern Kentucky University, is doing his acting internship with Art Reach.

Audience members will also be introduced to a few more characters in the tale, namely Kai, Arthur’s brother, and a young Guinevere, who is in love with Arthur.

One of the most unique aspects of the play, said the Stewart, is the audience participation involved in the play.

“Our goal is to call up as many children as we can,” said Stewart. “And they are not called up just to be cute, they are going to be apart of the action. They are required to act as well and they help to move the plot along.”

Stewart said the children in the audience become a part of the play to help them learn about self-esteem, friendship and courage.

“It is a learning moment for each kid,” said Stewart. “Not only are they getting up in public, for the most part they are asked to help Arthur do different things in the plot.”

If anyone is interested in having the art reach program perform “The Sword and the Stone,” or the other touring production “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” to a school in the area, please call the number below.
