MORROW — After five days of incarceration, a man who led police on a high-speed chase through several communities is being released from the Warren County Jail.

Michael Keith Stamper, 28, of Morrow, appeared today, March 2, before Judge Donald Oda II for a preliminary hearing in Warren County Court. Stamper was released from jail with a location tracking device and charges of reckless operation, failure to comply with a police order and driving under suspension were bound over to a grand jury, court officials said.

Police said Stamper sped away from a traffic stop on U.S. 22-3 near Morrow-Cozaddale Road on Wednesday, Feb. 24, and led Morrow police Chief Heath Kilburn and Hamilton Twp. officers on a high-speed pursuit. The chase proceeded along Ohio 48 into Lebanon and ended without capture near the Warren/Clinton county line.

Stamper was arrested hours after the chase at a home in South Lebanon, where he called police to report that the vehicle he was driving, a 1996 green Volkswagen four-door hatchback, had been stolen, according to Kilburn.

During the pursuit, Stamper was able to avoid the tire-puncturing “Stop Sticks” deployed by Warren County Sheriff’s deputies at three different points along Ohio 48.

Deputies had better luck in the early morning hours of Sunday, Feb. 28, in a high-speed pursuit along northbound Interstate 71. Warren County Sheriff Larry Sims said a deputy assisted Cincinnati police by stopping a reported stolen 2004 Toyota Corolla with “Stop Sticks” near the Ohio 48 exit. Sims said the vehicle’s tires punctured and the arrest was made about three miles down the highway.
