Student who stabbed classmate with pencil could face charges

HAMILTON — Police said it will be up to the parents to press charges against the boy who stabbed their son with a pencil Wednesday, Jan. 13.
The altercation between the two seventh-grade students occurred at Garfield Middle School Wednesday, Jan. 13.
Hamilton police spokesman Rich Burkhardt said a report was made and a detective was assigned to the case. He said the investigator plans to talk with the parents of the victim to find out if they want to press charges.
The boys got into a brief tussle in the hallway between third and fourth periods, said Joni Copas, Hamilton City Schools spokeswoman.
Copas said the victim was not seriously injured and was not transported to the hospital.
Copas also said Garfield staff did not notify Hamilton police right away, but did call both boys’ parents.
Staff took “appropriate disciplinary action, which typically includes suspension” for the boy who stabbed the victim, Copas said.
Copas said it’s unknown if the victim sought medical attention after he and his parents left the school.
