MIDDLETOWN — A shooting victim who was shot earlier this month in an alley behind a Central Avenue grocery says the bullet is still lodged in his torso.

During a preliminary hearing Friday, Oct. 16, Middletown Municipal Court Judge Mark Wall sent the felonious assault case against the accused shooter, 19-year-old Matthew Neumann, to a Butler County grand jury.

Neumann has been held in the Middletown City Jail under a $100,000 bond since he turned himself in to police on Oct. 7. Wall on Friday declined a request to lower the bond amount.

Neumann is accused of shooting Benjamin Brownlee, 20, of Franklin, at about 2:15 a.m. Oct. 4 in an alley behind the 2100 block of Central Avenue.

Brownlee testified Friday that he and Neumann, who once were good friends, arranged to meet in the alley for a fight over text messages they had sent to Browlee’s girlfriend’s cell phone.

Brownlee said four shots were fired, with one striking him in the lower right abdomen about a half-inch above his hip. Brownlee said he is slated to have the bullet removed Thursday.
