CAMPBELLSBURG, Ky. — The wife of a Franklin man who died in a single-vehicle crash this week told police she fell asleep behind the wheel, according to Kentucky State Police.
Trooper Seth Willis said Wednesday, Sept. 2, charges had not been filed against Jessica Isaacs, 23, who was driving the vehicle south on Interstate 71 near Campbellsburg. The crash was reported to have happened at 12:42 a.m. Monday, Aug. 31.
Michael D. Isaacs was killed in the crash after being ejected from the vehicle. Willis said the 24-year-old father was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, which probably led to the ejection.
Jessica Isaacs told authorities after the wreck that she began to fall asleep at the wheel, then noticed the vehicle had drifted to the left into the median. She admitted to overcorrecting the car and losing control of the steering. The vehicle went back onto the median, flipped and crossed into northbound traffic before striking a guardrail, Wills said.
A medical helicopter transported Michael Isaacs to Carroll County Memorial Hospital in Kentucky, where he was pronounced dead.
The Isaacs’ infant son, whose age was not released, was not injured. He was strapped into a child seat, according to police.
The young widow was transported by ambulance to the same facility, then transferred to the University Hospital in Cincinnati later Monday, where she was listed in good condition.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash. Willis said the stretch of I-71 where the crash occurred typically is a busy thoroughfare to Louisville, Lexington and southern Indiana.
“This corridor of I-71 ... we do have a very high flow of traffic,” he said.
The crash remains under investigation by the Kentucky State Police.
