HAMILTON — A Hamilton man turned himself into authorities, confessing that he dumped his pregnant dog last week on a St. Clair Twp. farm in frigid, snowy weather.

Darryl Lawson, 45, of Hamilton, was cited Tuesday, Feb. 16, for misdemeanor charges of abandonment, abuse to companion animals, unlicensed dog and dog running at large. He is scheduled to appear at 8 a.m. March 3 in Hamilton Municipal Court.

Animal Friends Humane Society Executive Director Meg Stephenson said Lawson left a message at the shelter over the weekend and then on Tuesday came to the shelter, where he was interviewed by a county humane officer.

“He did say that he could no longer care for her,” Stepenson said when asked if Lawson gave a reason for abandoning his dog.

The beagle mix, dubbed “Snowflake,” and her seven “pupsicles” were discovered Feb. 10 by Chris Demoret on his St. Clair Twp. farm after a snowstorm. The dog, which was emaciated, had snuggled up to a hay roll on the Benzing farm and delivered her seven pups.

Stephenson said only five of the puppies survived, but they are healthy and soon will be available for adoption. She said they have had calls from across the country from people interested in adopting both mom and puppies.
