DEERFIELD TWP., Warren County — An Illinois man apparently shot himself in the head after firing at Warren County Sheriff’s deputies responding to a domestic violence call on Saturday evening, Nov. 7, according to a new release from the sheriff’s office.

The man, identified as Robert Piercefield, Jr., 56, died at the scene. He was last known to be living in Grove City, Illinois and was believed to be here visiting his estranged wife, who called 911.

Deputies were called to 4539 South Shore Drive, Deerfield Twp. at about 6:16 p.m. Multiple shots were fired at a sergeant and two deputies. Deputy Mark Purdy returned fire but did not hit Piercefield, who then shot himself in the head, according to the news release.

Sergeant Doug Wheatley was treated for a minor hand injury sustained when he dove for cover. No one else was injured.
