A Franklin truck driver has been charged in a four-vehicle crash that seriously injured the U.S. Senate majority leader’s wife, according to the Virginia State Police.
Alan W. Snader, 59, of Franklin, was charged with reckless driving in the crash that occurred around 2 p.m. Thursday, March 11, in the nouthbound lanes of Interstate 95 in Fairfax County, according to police.
A spokesman for Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., says the senator’s wife, Landra, and their daughter, Lana Barringer, 49, were injured when a tractor-trailer rear-ended the minivan they were riding in.
Landra Reid, 69, underwent surgery Friday to stabilize serious injuries. She suffered a broken back and neck in the crash, but her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. She and their daughter were taken by ambulance to Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Va.
Barringer was released Thursday night, hospital spokesman Tony Raker said. “Mrs. Reid has a broken nose, broken back and broken neck,” Reid spokesman Jim Manley said in a statement. “Lana has a neck injury and facial lacerations.”
Manley said Landra Reid could feel her extremities.
The crash happened when the 2005 Honda Odyssey driven by Reid’s daughter began braking when it was rear-ended by Snader’s truck loaded with rolls of plastic, police said. The impact forced the Odyssey to rear-end the vehicle in front of it, a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Jeep was then forced into the next lane, where it struck a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt.
Snader drives for P.A.M. Transit Inc., according to Virginia police. The company has 10 offices, including two in Ohio in Willard and North Jackson. Larry Goddard, P.A.M. chief financial officer, said the transport company is conducting “a thorough investigation of the accident.”
He expressed the company’s regret for this “unfortunate event” and sent the company’s thoughts and prayers to all people involved.
No one was home at Snader’s residence Friday. One neighbor said Snader used to work at General Motors in Moraine before he became a truck driver.
