MIDDLETOWN — Five people were transported to Atrium Medical Center Thursday, Sept. 23, after a dump truck triggered a chain-reaction crash involving two other vehicles and landed in a ravine.
Middletown emergency crews were dispatched at about 4 p.m. to the intersection of Verity Parkway and Access Road 3 after a dump struck collided with a Dodge Caravan and Chevrolet S-10 truck.
The three vehicles were traveling north on Verity Parkway when the pickup truck stopped to make a right turn onto Access Road. The minivan slowed, but the driver of the dump truck, Tim Dunnagan of Hillsboro, slammed into the minivan, which struck the pickup, Middletown police said.
Dunnagan, who police said was traveling between 60 and 65 mph in the 50 mph zone, reportedly lost control of his vehicle and crossed the median before crashing through a guardrail and into a ravine. The dump truck, which was empty, landed on its side.
Dunnagan, who suffered head and back injuries, was transported to Atrium along with two passengers each from the pickup truck and minivan. Police said none of the injuries were life-threatening.
The pickup and minivan each had three passengers.
Middletown Fire Deputy Chief Brent Dominy said all involved were lucky to escape without more serious injuries.
“Dump truck and car accidents don’t always end well because of the difference in weight and size,” Dominy said.
Crews on scene requested a city crew respond to help remove a downed tree near the roadway as a result of the crash. A truck from Sandy’s Towing was called to extract the dump truck from the ravine.
Middletown Police Officer Gary Bender said when he arrived on the scene passengers in the mini van and pickup were being tended to, so Dunnagan became his top priority.
