MONROE — Four Monroe businesses have employees who were caught selling alcohol to a person younger than the legal drinking age of 21, police said.
The employees were caught during an alcohol compliance sting conducted this week by the Monroe Police Department. During a two-hour period, a 20-year-old civilian operative working with police visited 12 businesses Wednesday, Oct. 7, in Monroe and Lemon Twp. to try to purchase alcohol, said police Chief Greg Homer.
Businesses that failed the surprise alcohol compliance check include Cassano’s Pizza and Subs on South Main Street, Kroger on Heritage Green Drive, Speedway Gas Station on Roden Park Drive and Shell Gas Station on Oxford State Road in Lemon Twp.
The employees who allegedly violated the state liquor law, a misdemeanor, were cited and face possible fines and up to six months in jail, Homer said. The department also contacts the Ohio Investigative Unit, which may choose to cite the businesses’ liquor licenses, he said.
Information of the sales also will be passed on to the Ohio Department of Public Safety for review.
The seven businesses that refused to sell alcohol to the underage operative will receive thank-you letters from the department, Homer said.
He also said the four businesses that violated the law will receive letters stating their alcohol sales practices are unacceptable.
The department began conducting alcohol sales compliance checks when Homer joined the department in 2004 , he said.
