P&G, Unilever fined by EU's competition watchdog

Wire report

BRUSSELS — The EU’s competition watchdog says it is fining Procter & Gamble and Unilever a total of €315.2 million ($456 million) for fixing prices for powdered laundry detergent together with Henkel in eight EU countries.

The European Commission said Wednesday that Henkel escaped a fine because it blew the whistle on the cartel.

It says the cartel lasted from Jan. 2002 until March 2005.

Procter & Gamble Co. has to pay €211.2 million, while Unilever was fined €104 million. Both companies had their fines reduced because they cooperated with the investigation.
