Ohio offers tax credits to keep Dayton company in state

COLUMBUS — Thaler Machine Co. has been part of the Dayton area since 1952, but the company is now considering relocation options that could mean a move to Columbus, Ind.

“We’re just exploring,” Pete Thaler, company vice president, said on Monday, Sept. 28. “We know we need more room. We don’t know where it’s going to be.”

His comments came after the Ohio Tax Credit Authority approved a 50 percent job creation tax credit for six years for the company to relocate to Springboro in Warren County, part of the state’s effort to keep the firm in Ohio.

Thaler confirmed that one of the possible relocation sites is in Springboro.

The company has more than 70 employees at two sites — on Hopeland Street in Dayton and in Miamisburg.

A decision is expected in a few weeks, Thaler said.

The company manufactures precision machine components for the aerospace, automotive and defense industries.

The value of the state tax credits to the company is estimated at $171,324. If it accepts, the company would be required to keep operations at the new site for 12 years. The tax credits would be part of a $3.8 million project expected to create 40 jobs and retain 76 jobs, a state press release said.

Other job creation tax credits approved Monday for Dayton-area companies:

  • Cintas Corporation No. 2, 45 percent tax credit for six-year term for expansion in Dayton. Value of credit is estimated at $180,654 and the company would have to keep operations at the site for 12 years. The credit is for a $70,000 project expected to create 100 jobs and retain 66 jobs.
  • Peerless Technologies Corporation, 50 percent tax credit for six years for expansion in Fairborn. The value is estimated at $288,427 and the company would be required to maintain operations for 12 years. The credit is for a $186,000 project expected to create 42 jobs and retain 47 jobs.
  • PerkinElmer Sensors Inc., 50 percent tax credit for six years for expansion in Miamisburg. The value is estimated at $209,180 and the company would be required to keep operations at the site for 12 years. It is for a $1.7 million project expected to create 45 jobs and retain 66 jobs.
  • Quickstep Composites LLC, 40 percent tax credit for six years for expansion in Dayton. The value is estimated at $96,071 and the company would be required to maintain operations for 12 years. It is for an $800,000 project expected to create 20 jobs.
