February snowstorms inflicted widespread damage

Staff Report

COLUMBUS — Insured losses for damage caused by winter storms in February totaled at least $28.2 million, a number still being calculated, the Ohio Insurance Institute said.

A total of 12,173 insurance claims for damage were filed across the state, according to the institute, an insurance industry trade organization. The loss total is expected to increase during the next few months because some property damage has yet to be detected or reported, institute officials said.

Nine of every 10 damage claims submitted involved homeowners or renters insurance. The snowstorms caused power failures, frozen pipes, sewer and drain backups, roof and gutter damage from ice and snow accumulation, and damage from fallen trees or limbs.
