Defense contractor big on small technology

A local military contractor is touting a new technology.

Projects Unlimited, Inc., a Vandalia-based producer of aviation electronics for the defense industry, said Thursday it has the capability to implement very small electronic components — the size of .01005 mm.

This capability is “crucial” at a time when military and aerospace platforms are seeking to reduce the size and weight of components where possible, the company said in a press release. The company has been placing .0201 components, which are about the size of “a grain of pepper,” the company said.

“The .01005 components are smaller and difficult to see with an unaided eye,” the company said in a statement. “We will begin production on printed circuit boards requiring .01005 later this summer.”

“It’s new technology and capability especially in the aerospace, military environment,” Charlie Witt, Projects Unlimited sales director, Eastern Region, said in an email to the Dayton Daily News. “With UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) and robotics on the emerging markets, it’s a significant capability with few companies in our industry currently using it.”

Projects Unlimited has about 170 employees in a 74,500-square-foot manufacturing facility off Sand Lake Road.
