Miller family hosts night of racing

The Miller racing family finally sponsored that Kil-Kare Speedway race they had always talked about. It just didn't happen the way they wanted.

Miller's Touch Racing hosted the Rich Miller Memorial for Sports Stocks on Friday, May 16. The race honored the longtime Kil-Kare driver who passed away in December from a brain tumor. Rich Miller was 46.

Extras

"Me and my little brother Richard talked about (sponsoring a race) for a long time," said Joe Miller. "Then he passed away, so we began saving up just to fulfill his wishes. ... It just makes it that more special because it is for him."

Racing action was postponed with several features left when Miamisburg's Toby Alfrey slammed hard into the retaining wall out of Turn 2 and flipped high into the catch fence.

Alfrey, who spectators said was talking and moving afterward, went to a local hospital to get checked out.

Brother Les Miller, whose sons Justin and Mike race at Kil-Kare, said the Rich Miller Memorial was the family's way of saying thanks to the drivers who come out every Friday.

"The reason we're doing this for him is he raced about every class out here," Les Miller said.

Shawn Stansell grabbed the lead from pole-sitter Joe Hensel on Lap 6 and never relinquished it to win the 40-lap feature. Mike South Jr. finished second, and Justin Miller was third.

Speed racer

Troy's Greg Stapleton carried his hot streak over from Shady Bowl Speedway. Stapleton, who won the first two American Modified Series races in DeGraff, set Kil-Kare's track record in the Modifieds. He turned a 13.677 seconds, topping Dick Dunlevy Jr.'s 13.743 set April 25.

Hot laps

New Carlisle's Roger Sloan Jr. took a wild spill into the alligator pit during the Compacts feature. Sloan's car went into Turn 3 hard and rolled, doing several flips before coming to rest in the pit. Sloan walked away.
