DAYTON — Jenny Nelson broke free from the restraints, grabbed a knife and ran to find her 4-year-old son and the man who had kicked in her front door and tied her up.

Police say Nelson stabbed the man in the back , and he fatally shot her twice in the abdomen with a shotgun about 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2.

Authorities believe Charlie W. Myers then kidnapped her son and dropped him off at an Interstate 70 rest stop near the Madison and Clark county line about 8:30 p.m., Montgomery County Sheriff Phil Plummer said. Plummer is expected to meet with the county prosecutor's office today to approve a murder charge against Myers, 22, of Columbus.

The boy told a Maryland couple at the rest stop that a man shot his mom. The boy was able to provide his home phone number and address, Plummer said. Deputies arrived at 80 Redder Ave. about 9:30 p.m. to find Nelson dead in the hallway.

"We were able to get him in custody quickly and give the family some relief," Plummer said. Sheriff's homicide investigators on Sunday, with help from the FBI's Violent Crimes Task Force, tracked Myers to his home at 70 McMillen Ave.

Myers confessed to his involvement in Nelson's death on Monday, Plummer said.

Investigators believe Myers drove to the home in a Honda that Nelson and her husband, Eddie, reported stolen Dec. 17 in Columbus while they attended a concert. Police say Myers stole two computers and a cell phone from Nelson's home. Investigators recovered one of the computers and are using it to try to determine whether Nelson and Myers knew each other.

Myers was in the Franklin County Jail on Monday night awaiting extradition to Montgomery County.
