HAMILTON — A Lemon Twp. woman indicted on two counts of theft and 21 counts of forgery for her role in a Nigerian check scam has entered a guilty plea to some of those charges.
Tena Knott, 39, 65 Oxford State Road, pleaded guilty Monday, Dec. 8, to one count of theft and four counts of forgery, according to the Butler County prosecutor's office. The remaining charges, all fifth-degree felonies, were merged.
Knott was arrested after police found stacks of check paper, piles of UPS envelopes and a list of alleged victims at her home in July.
According to Middletown and Monroe detectives, Knott told them she'd been contacted over the Internet by a Nigerian man asking her to take part in what she initially thought was a legitimate business.
Knott admitted she'd been involved in the scam since July 11, and that she had made $6,000, police said. But she continued bilking other victims after finding out the Nigerian business was a scam.
Butler County Common Pleas Judge Patricia Oney is scheduled to sentence Knott on Jan. 26. She faces up to five years in jail.
