Gas prices may fuel speeding ticket cost increase
Cities considering adding surcharge to speeding tickets
Wednesday, July 09, 2008
FRANKLIN - Pushing the speed limit could soon cost you more than you expect as departments add a gas surcharge to offset fuel costs.
Cities around the country have already made the move, adding anywhere from $10 to $15
Franklin Councilman Carl Bray said he is hesitant to put more of a burden on residents, but the city has to consider its finances.
"We got to look at our costs," he said.
Franklin officials will discuss adding a gas surcharge to speeding tickets at the July 16 Finance Committee meeting.
Capt. Colton, Franklin's acting chief said if council wants to add the charge, he will support it.
In Carlisle, police officers have been advised to turn cruisers off to conserve energy. The city's fuel spending has jumped 35 percent since last year, said Carlisle City Manager Sherry Callahan.
