MIDDLETOWN — A truck carrying a load of scrap metal flipped on its side while trying to turn from Ohio 122 onto Carmody Boulevard, scattering dozens of old metal brake shoes everywhere.

Sgt. Jeff McGuire of the Middletown Division of Police said the driver, 48-year-old Michael Hardewig of Seven Mile, was traveling east on Ohio 122 at about 8:15 a.m. Thursday, June 19, when he attempted to make a left turn onto Carmody Boulevard. McGuire was unsure how the driver lost control, but the truck overturned, spilling its load.

Hardewig was not injured in the crash and was cited for failure to maintain reasonable control, according to police records. Hardewig is an employee of Brown Transport, a Gratis-based company.

Police blocked off the right lane of Carmody while a tow truck attempted to pull the truck upright. Firefighters were on the scene to contain and clean up small puddles of oil and diesel fuel leaking from the truck. A small backhoe was used to scoop up the metal brake shoes, which were mostly scattered in a lot just off the side of the road.

Jerry Miller, who works in the safety department at Brown Transport, said the gross weight of the truck and its load was 76,000 pounds. Miller was unclear on what caused the accident and said he wasn't certain of the driver's destination.

"He couldn't have been going too far from here," Miller said.

Butler County Sheriff's deputies also were at the scene.
