The city of Middletown received more than $10,000 in grants for youth recreation camps this summer, Recreation Administrator Abby Ison told the Middletown Park Board at its Monday, May 5, meeting.
Those grants included:
Extras
• A $3,800 grant from the Middletown Youth Council for a leadership camp for seventh- and eighth-graders.
• A $5,000 grant from the Middletown Community Foundation for summer family and learning camps.
• A grant for $1,000 for swim passes for needy children.
• A grant for $500 for the All American Fishing Derby at Smith Park.
Splash pad to open
Ison also reported that the splash pad for Douglass Park is expected to be open in June.
'My Park' initiative
Park Board Chairman Merrell Wood said the "My Park" initiative to get neighborhoods and other organizations to adopt and help maintain a city park is getting into gear following the recent success of Berachah Baptist Church's work at Damon Park.
Church volunteers made repairs to the basketball park and built a picnic shelter as part of a four-day project.
Wood said community workdays are set for the other five parks targeted for improvements through this public/private partnership.
They include Sunset Park on May 24; Miami Park on May 31; Dixie Heights and Lefferson parks on June 7; and Old South Park on June 15.
