Iraq war vets to serve as grand marshals for parade

Middletown's Memorial Day parade will march May 26, featuring a sibling team of grand marshals.

The parade will start at 10 a.m., moving from Smith Park down Verity Parkway to Woodside Cemetery, where a ceremony will take place. The grand marshals are Iraq war veterans Nicholas Hamm and Rachel Hamm.

Nicholas Hamm is a 1999 honors graduate from Madison High School. In 2002, his Army unit was deployed to Iraq to support what would become Operation Iraqi Freedom. The unit returned later, earning a Presidential Unit Citation for its efforts.

Rachel Hamm graduated from Madison High School in May 2002 with an honors diploma. In October 2004, she transferred to Bahrain to directly support Operations Enduring/Iraqi Freedom until July 2005, when she returned to the United States to report to Carrier Strike Group Twelve, where she is still serving today. She has been evaluated as the number one second class petty officer within her command two years in a row.

The speaker at the memorial ceremony will be Middletown native Maj. Joseph Adam Jackson. In 2001, Jackson was mobilized in support of operations in Bosnia-Herzegovina. In October 2002, he was assigned to the 2nd Battalion of the 17th Field Artillery Regiment stationed in South Korea. He also has served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Middletown Municipal Court Judge Mark Wall will be the master of ceremonies. The minister will be Ray Phillips, the senior pastor of the Stratford Heights Church of God.
