Hall of Fame eludes Nuxhall again
COMMENT: Why should Nuxhall be in the Hall of Fame?

FAIRFIELD — The honor of being nominated for the Ford C. Frick Award was enough for Joe Nuxhall, his son said Tuesday, Feb. 19, after the National Baseball Hall of Fame's selection was announced.
So fans of the late Hamilton native will have to wait until 2009 to see if Nuxhall will be enshrined in Cooperstown, N.Y. Despite a campaign organized by Butler County Commissioner Gregory Jolivette that helped Nuxhall garner the most online votes and make him a finalist for the award, Dave Niehaus, the voice of the Seattle Mariners, was selected.
Extras
"I know Greg Jolivette is going to be disappointed," son Kim Nuxhall said chuckling, "but we're not."
In addition to Jolivette's push, state Sen. Gary Cates, R-West Chester Twp., led 33 senators to sign a letter in December urging the hall to select the Reds Hall of Famer.
"We still want to thank everyone for their support," Kim Nuxhall said. "Dad was truly honored just to be picked for this award, and I know that he wouldn't be disappointed either, just purely grateful that he had the opportunity."
The former pitcher and broadcaster died Nov. 15 at age 79 after suffering a number of ailments, including lymphoma.
The Frick Award is presented annually to a broadcaster for "major contributions to baseball," according to the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Joe Nuxhall was a finalist for the award last year.
He became youngest player in major league history in 1944 at age 15 and had been with the Reds for more than six decades. When online voting for the Frick Award ended in December, he received more than 67 percent of all ballots (82,304 of 122,505 votes) as one of the fans' three choices.
Reds spokesman Rob Butcher said it is disappointing because Nuxhall's longtime broadcast partner Marty Brennaman was elected in 2000.
Said Butcher, "When you think of Reds baseball you think of Marty and Joe."

My biggest memory of Joe was when I was 13 and on a school retreat. We were all so excited to see the immortal Joe and a special guest! Imagine the surprise of about 100 kids ages 11-18 when he showed up over an hour late, very intoxicated( you could smell it)and gave foul language laced speach about how much his manager hated him when he first started in baseball. Then didin’t want to sign autographs. So, no it doesn’t bother me he’s not in the HOF. A great guy indeed!

Stop throwin’ back and forth on here like high schoolers in a chat room! He didn’t get in - sorry. I think he is a great man, but there is nothing you can do about it. Vote next year and get over it.

I have never heard any less intelligent comments than some I read on the Reds blog. They actually give the area a bad name, and that makes me part of it. To dishonor Joe Nuxhall is almost a sin. The man is what baseball SHOULD be about, not what it is about. Dick Vitale is a self-promoting fog-horned egoist thats a hero with many; probably with the same ones who are bashing Joe. Unfortunately, these reactions are today’s society in a nutshell; brash, rude and crude.

HOF? Hall of Shame! If over 80,000 votes for Joe doesn’t speak to these people, then they need to listen better! Spears,if you didn’t know who Joe was until after his death, you live on Mars or you need to get involved in some community service, because everybody who helps anyone in our community knows Joe’s name, his reputation, and his heart.Ask the elderly, the hungry, and the children! And it was his baseball history and talent that enabled him to open the doors of service! Thank you Joe!

what an audacity?
Joe is one of the premier voices in baseball. But since he didn’t boradcast for the Yankees, Mets, or other teams that MLB has played favorite to, once again he is denied. Hopefully one day Joe will get in, I think it was he that said they should burn down the hall if Davey “The Chief” COncepcion was never voted in, he may be right on that one too.

I think it’s funny how the criteria reads, “Major contributions to baseball.” Does anyone know what Niehaus contributed? He’s the guy that says, “Get out the rye bread and mustard grandma, it’s grand salami time”, when someone hits a grand slam. Here’s what Nuxhall did, 135-114 career record, 3.90 era, 1,372 K’s, oh ya one last contribution, “This is the old left hander rounding third and heading for home, goodnight everyone.”

I’d say something to Boxter but I have a policy against feeding trolls. Reds fans know how important Joe was to this organization. That’s more important than anything else.

I love how people come on here saying ‘Joe wasn’t anybody-he didn’t amount to anything.’ The man came into the major leagues at 15! What the heck did any of you accomplish by the age of 15?! I highly doubt anything that could hold a candle to the accomplishments Joe had. Get a life! John Doe, you’re absolutely right, “He is probably looking down and saying it’s alright.” God Bless Joe!!

I’d go to sleep at night with Jim and Joe on the radio in the 60s, listening through an earphone connected to my “digital” clock radio, when “digital” meant painted numbers on wafer-thin boards cut in half that flipped. Joe was the common thread through my lifetime with the Reds with Jim, Al and Marty. His Star of the Games with Tony Perez were priceless…”I heet the ball good, Yoe.”
Hope he gets in the HOF soon.

I grew up in Middletown, now in CA. Anytime the Reds are mentioned, certain names come to mind as being synomynous with them- one, Waite Hoyt, the other Joe Nuxhall. There are more than a few players in the Hall whose numbers don’t do justice to being enshrined. That,is why provision has been made for the impact a player or other individuals have had should be included. Joe is no exception and should be included due to his overall influence in the game and his influence in life.

Boxer you need to get a clue - Joe was a life long expert in the game unlike most of the people on ESPN Joe did his job quite well as the “color” man on the announce team. He brought the game to the fan - over the years I listened to the games, I bet you would find that most Reds fans turned the TV down and listened to Marty and Joe - Mr. Hoyt was also a expert at the game from the radio view. The gentleman that won this contest was with more than 1 team Joe was Reds only

Like I said, if he wasn’t from Cincinnati you people could care less. Was he a nice old man? Yes. Was he a good announcer? NO. He was terrible at what he did. To all of you that say he gave his life to baseball. Give me a break. HE GOT PAID TO WATCH BASEBALL! He never worked a day in his life. Gave his life to baseball? What a joke.

i want to thank everyone who voted for joe. it is a shame that the committee made a bad decision. we’d all like to say “boooo”,just like we would if an ump missed a call. well, the game goes on and the reds need our support this year. right after the reds win the world series we will flood the internet with votes for joe and give them another chance to get it right. thanks

Boxter you do not know what you are talking about. the man was and still a hof when you can pitch in the majors at 15 and stay in their for 60 plus years then i don’t know what you would call that. the cincinnati reds was the first team ever and like alot of teams move around but not the reds they stay in cincinnati. i grew up with joe and marty and he will sadly be missed thru out reds country.

Not a shocker quite a few Hall of Fame players made because of who their friends were, not because of their overall ability. Joe is the most deserving and will make it someday, but it will take the less deserving to be out of the way.

Joe ain’t gettin in dead or alive. So what you spent your summers, listening to him drone over that old AM radio static, so what your father, grandfather, brother, uncle, had the radio on in the basement, patio, backyard, RV, listening to him call/ butcher the most seminal moments in Red’s history. It’s only Cincinatti. Nobody cares. Let it go. Buy a ticket to the game.. or get a television.

As a true Cubby Fan, I would like to say that Harry Carey and Jack Brickhouse would be ashamed of the Hall of Fame for not selecting Joe. A broadcaster brings the game alive and has commentary between each pitch and play. Joe did exactly that. The people should be the final vote not the idiots that never listen to a game on TV or radio. Over 80,000 people said “put Joe in” and a hand full of people that never heard Joe, did not vote for Joe. Not Good for MLB!!

HOF? That is a joke. When you leave out the greats and enshrine the average, what is the point. Joe was a Hall of Famer in every respect. He might not have been as polished as some of the other announcers but no one love the game more than Joe.
Lets try again next time and give him 100,000 votes!!!
Go Joe, GO!!!!

To Boxter, I guess Joe made some calls here and there that might not set well with you, but he put his heart into baseball and did a fantastic job overall. A Career as a pitcher and another career as a broadcaster, yes, he has 10+ extra years of broadcasting than the gentleman in Seattle that started in ‘77. To me, if he was that bad he’d been off the air years ago. MLB missed the call on this one. Joe was a gem for Cincinnati, or any other city he would have been born in.

Joe Nuxall not only did a lot to promote baseball, he also did a lot for Butler County’s older residents. He was honorary chairman of the county funded Elderly Services Program. He and his mother promoted this valuable service to those in need of assistance in their homes. In the over ten years the Elderly Services Program has been in Butler County, countless older persons have stayed healthier longer in their own homes for a very reasonable monthly cost per person.

Why do people think he should be in? If he was not from Cincinnati you people wouldn’t have an opinion on this. He was horrible at what he did. Dead air. Mispronounced names. “High fly ball to right left field”. He does not belong in the HOF today or tomorrow. Just because he is from Cincinnati does not put him in. That’s the same stupid people that think Jose Rijo should be in because he played for the reds. Sorry folks, but the voters have this one right.

What does Major league basball officials have against this area? Over and over again the impressive positives of the Reds have been ignored. If they got a break just once maybe it would kick start them again. Joe deserved it and this is sad. very sad.

There is no bigger Joe Nuxhall fan than me but I will disagree with John. The Ol’ lefthander was NOT a GREAT broadcaster. In fact, he was not real good at all…but he was a character and a very beloved local figure who just got the shaft by MLB. The fact that he was here broadcasting all these years says enough.

Say it ain’t so Joe! By all means our Joe should have been selected for the Frick Award. Never has baseball had a guy like Joe who was a hometown Boy and never was arrogant but down to earth. I remember riding in the Big Blue Homecoming parade. Joe was in the car ahead of us with John Tromans. He yelled back at my husband Mike saying,”Mike what are you doing back there.” He knew people of his hometown and you would never know that he was a celebrity. He was just Joe and that is something great
