It would appear that a funeral service is a ceremony where we express our love and respect for the deceased by enriching the funeral director.

Extremely informative article. I am looking forward to the upcoming ones and hope there will be a segment on cemeteries (cost, etc.) as well. My daughter’s father (my ex-husband) just died and, at his request, was cremated (in another state). This whole experience has changed my own mind about death and I too now wish to be cremated.

I wonder what the value of a caring funeral service by knowledgeable funeral staff is to Ashley if $6000 is too much? What would YOU feel is fair to bury your loved one with dignity?

I think your series has been most informative; particularly the information on the donor program to WSU. We have chosen that option and feel it was the right choice for us. Our family was treated with the utmost respect by the WSU representatives upon the passing of our loved one. Likewise, our local funeral director was most helpful and very supportive of our family when we planned the memorial service and the private burial.

Thanks to all those involved in presenting this highly informative series. The online videos provide much more info. I wish Miami and Shelby and Champaign County price lists had been included. It’s a shame some of the basics of funeral planning aren’t provided in schools as part of consumerism classes. Any chance this series will be available on a CD for purchase? In a year my clipped articles will be torn and yellowed, but the info will still be of use.

I think the way funeral homes operate is disgusting. There’s absolutely no reason why a single funeral should cost $6,000. These people only get away with it because families are so griefstricken and want a way to honor their loved ones. They turn to the time-honored tradition of funerals and viewings, and funeral homes can charge pretty much whatever they want. There’s no reason a wooden box and a hole in the ground should cost so much. When I die, I want to be cremated.

I believe cremation is the way to go. I had my husband cremated and I have arranged for my cremation. Scatter the ashes to the four winds.
