ROSSBURG — World of Outlaws driver Jason Meyers knows what it takes to win the Kings Royal.
He’s watched it happen the past two years from the winner’s bumper.
The California driver finished second in both 2007 and 2008 at the $50,000-to-win winged sprint car event at Eldora Speedway. He hopes his turn to cross the line first comes tonight, July 18, in one of dirt sprint car racing’s crown jewels.
The driver of the No. 14 Digital Deliveries Networks/Elite Landscaping car for Elite Racing nearly pulled off a last-lap slide job on winner Daryn Pittman in 2008. Does Meyers, who entered the weekend trailing Donny Schatz and Joey Saldana in WoO points, wonder “What if?” about those near misses?
“No, you don’t do that to yourself. You treat it as any other race. At the end of the night it’s not any other race, but you certainly have to approach it that way,” he said.
The Knight Before the Kings Royal, a full-points race on the WoO schedule, kicked off action on Friday. The National Racing Alliance Sprint Invaders also ran Friday — with NASCAR drivers Tony Stewart and Kasey Kahne competing — and also return tonight.
