Fans urged to vote for Gregg

Area racing fans have seen Travis Gregg dominate on racetracks for years. Whether it was on the dirt clay in a sprint car at Lawrenceburg, Ind., or the tight twisting turns in a go-kart at G&J Kartway in Camden, or on a high-speed oval in the Indy Lights Series, Gregg was — and still is — one of the best on the track.

Well, now you have a chance to let your voice be heard.

In celebration of their 100th race under the Indy Racing League banner, which happens to be the Kentucky Indy Lights 100 on Aug. 1, fans are urged to vote for their three favorite Indy Lights race drivers from 2002 to the present.

To me, it seems only fitting that fans can give Gregg the chance to be recognized once again at Kentucky Speedway. Gregg excelled at the speedy 1.5-mile tri-oval. In four Indy Lights starts in Sparta, Ky., Gregg turned in three top-five finishes. He won the 2005 race at Kentucky, to go along with his wins at Homestead-Miami Speedway and Texas that season.

In 24 career starts in the series, Gregg had seven poles and was on the two-car front row an amazing 12 times.

A lack of sponsorship dollars prevented Gregg from continuing his Indy Lights career. Otherwise it’s almost certain he would have attained his ultimate goal of racing in the Indianapolis 500.

Sadly in racing, sponsorship dollars don’t always go to the guy or gal with the most talent. Gregg is definitely a case in point.

Gregg is among the drivers whom voters can select to the Indy Lights 100th Anniversary team. Go to indycar.com/pro.

You can often find the Miami University graduate racing in the Ohio Valley Karting Association events at G&J Kartway.

Fisher findings

IndyCar driver Sarah Fisher, of Commercial Point, near Columbus, was spotted at Kil-Kare Raceway in Xenia. During last weekend’s Open Wheel Friday event, Fisher was on hand to help Kyle O’Gara’s Ford Focus Midget series racing effort. Fisher is married to Andy O’Gara, Kyle’s brother.

Kyle O’Gara finished fourth in the fast Ford Focus feature.

Fisher will race in the Meijer Indy 300 on Aug. 1 at Kentucky Speedway.
