OXFORD — It has been hard enough to deal with the Miami University women’s basketball team this season when one of their two veteran guards is having a good day.
When both senior Maggie Boyer and junior Courtney Osborn are on full blast at the same time, however, it’s almost unfair.
Osborn scored 27 points, Boyer scored 15 and the RedHawks scored a solid 72-61 victory over the Ball State Cardinals at Millett Hall on Saturday.
“They were great on both ends of the court,” Miami coach Maria Fantanarosa said. “They were on a mission.”
Osborn, who has scored 27 or more points four times this season, also had three assists, three steals and a blocked shot.
Boyer, who has scored 14 or more points in five of her last six games, had four assists, three steals and a block.
The RedHawks, rebounding after having lost two of its previous three games, improved to 16-5 overall, 7-2 in the Mid-American Conference.
Ball State (7-14, 2-6 MAC) led by as many as eight points in the first half behind the play of 6-foot-2 senior Suzanne Grossnickle, who scored 18 points.
“In the first half we didn’t play like we wanted to, but we really regrouped in the second half,” Osborn said. “We dictated what they did instead of the other way around.”
Kristen Olowinski added 13 points and eight rebounds for the RedHawks.
Sophomore forward Erica Almady, who missed 11 games with a knee injury earlier this season, completed a key 3-point play late in the first half and had four rebounds, two steals and a block in just 10 minutes off the bench.
“Erica sparked us,” Fantanarosa said. “With Lillian (Pitts) in foul troulble, what’s what we needed.”
Miami plays four of its next five games on the road, starting Wednesday night at Central Michigan.
