ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Miami University men’s basketball team is still looking for its first win of the season following a disappointing showing in the opening round of the Basketball Travelers Tournament.

The RedHawks fell behind Louisiana Tech early Friday night, Nov. 20, and never really got back into the game on the way to a 74-62 loss at The Pit on the University of New Mexico campus.

“We just didn’t come out with any kind of energy,” MU coach Charlie Coles said after watching his team fall to 0-3. “It was just a bad effort. Terribly disappointing.”

The RedHawks, who never led in the game, committed turnovers on their first four possessions and six of their first 10.

Louisiana Tech (2-0) scored 13 points off Miami’s 10 first-half turnovers to build a 36-26 lead, and the closest the RedHawks got in the second half was within seven at 69-62 with 1 minute and 34 seconds left in the game.

“We’re not stringing anything together offensively or defensively,” Coles said. “I’m at a loss because we want to run some things, and we’re having trouble doing it.”

The lone bright spot on the night was sophomore forward Julian Mavunga, who made 3-of-4 3-point attempts and recorded a double-double with career highs in points (16), rebounds (12) and minutes (37).

“I’ve been telling Julian the last two days it’s all about production, production, production,” Coles said. “He had 16 points and 12 rebounds, and I’ll take that. I’ll definitely take that.”

But Nick Winbush, who scored a career-high 26 points in Miami’s 72-70 loss at Kentucky on Monday, didn’t get his first points until the second half against the Bulldogs and finished with just five points and two rebounds.

Kenny Hayes also struggled, making just 3-of-12 shots on the way to eight points.

Adam Fletcher added nine points, while Karmer Soderberg and Orlando Williams each scored eight.

“I will say this, the good thing is the season ain’t over with,” Coles said. “We’ll be back tomorrow, and let’s pray and hope we can do a better job and represent our fine school and our fine fans a little bit better than we did tonight.”
