FAIRBORN — One big run was all it took for the Fenwick High School boys basketball team to earn a Greater Catholic League North Division win over Alter on Saturday at the Ervin J. Nutter Center.

The run took almost all of the third quarter, and the Falcons needed every bit of it in a 50-43 win.

Fenwick used a 9-2 run to close out the first half to get out in front, 32-21.

Jeff Klaus began the run with a free throw and then an old-fashioned three-point play, then teammate Will Sennett got the hot hand from outside. In a span of two minutes, Sennett sank 3-pointers from the left and right side to put the Falcons ahead for good.

The Falcons then outscored Alter 18-7 in the third quarter — including a 12-2 run to begin the quarter — to pull away.

“Our kids played great defense,” Fenwick coach Pat Kreke said. “I thought our defense really won the game for us, until the end of the fourth quarter, when our kids didn’t seem to want to stop anybody. “But I think our kids did a wonderful job of running the offense and executing. Defensively, I thought they really shut them down and did a great job.”

Frank Catrine led Fenwick with 13 points. John Luke Arrington finished with 12.

Alter’s Jaaron Simmons led all scorers with 15 points.

“We made our adjustments at halftime and thought we could exploit some things offensively,” said Kreke, whose team is 9-7, 4-7 GCL. “And our defense did a nice job with the zone in the second quarter, so we just stayed with it.”

Alter chipped away and trimmed its deficit to single digits, but ultimately ran out of time.

Simmons, Jake Laravie and Darius Miller combined for a 7-2 run to pull the Knights within seven points, but time ran out on their comeback effort.

“We can’t take these games off our home court, but we did. And it took our advantage away,” Alter coach Joe Petrocelli said, referring to the game being moved to the Nutter Center. “They thought the home crowd was going to be too large, I guess. We will only play four games on our home court this year.” Alter fell to 8-8, 6-5 GCL.

Both teams return to action on Tuesday. Alter will play host to Roger Bacon while Fenwick will travel to Moeller.

“This was a great battle again. Two great GCL ballclubs battling it out in front of a great crowd,” Kreke said. “This was a great atmosphere for a basketball game.”
