Zach Johnson is making his name known in the Eastern Michigan University record books.
The 2005 Springboro High School graduate was a walk-on candidate for the EMU football team who, once given a chance to play, made an immediate impact.
In 2006, he played in 12 games and started 11 as the team’s punter. He finished the year with 65 punts for 2,603 yards and a 40.1 average, which earned him a spot as one of 10 semifinalists for the Ray Guy Award.
Counting this year’s first seven games, Johnson has accumulated 157 punts for 6,458 yards, which ranks fifth on the school’s all-time list, and a 41.1-yard average, which ranks second on the all-time list.
Cross country
• Jeff See (Middletown) finished third overall in a time of 25 minutes, 7.3 seconds to lead the Ohio State men’s cross country team to a second-place finish Sunday, Nov. 1 at the 2009 Big Ten Cross Country Championships in State College, Pa.
Two weeks after finishing 165th at the Indiana State Pre-Nationals, See — the reigning Big Ten Runner of the Week — finished just seven seconds behind All-American Hassan Mead of Minnesota and only two seconds behind Eliot Krause of Wisconsin.
Women’s soccer
• The Wilmington Quakers lost their soccer match on Monday, Nov. 2, ending the college careers of both Alex Hesson (Monroe) and Margaret Fox (Lebanon).
The two seniors were part of a class that has posted a 50-21-8 record. Hesson also finished this season tied for the team lead in goals with 12.
