SPRINGBORO — Springboro High School coach Troy Holtrey feels like he’s got a gem of a tournament. SHS will host its annual Domino’s Holiday Tournament today and Friday, and it’s a pretty fair lineup of boys basketball talent: Springboro (6-0), Middletown (4-1), Dayton Meadowdale (5-0) and St. Xavier (3-3).
“I haven’t seen a tournament around here as good as this right now,” Holtrey said. “Having a sprinkle of the (Greater Miami Conference), the (Greater Western Ohio Conference), the (Greater Catholic League) and the Dayton City League, I think it’s as good as it can get.”
Holtrey’s Panthers will meet Meadowdale in today’s opener at 6:30 p.m., followed by Middletown vs. St. Xavier.
The Middies are coming off a humbling 55-38 loss at Moeller last Friday.
“You couldn’t script it any better for us that we have to come back and play another GCL opponent,” Middletown coach Josh Andrews said. “We want that repetition in those environments. We want to be tested.”
The Bombers are scoring 50.3 points and giving up 48.3 per game. Their leading scorer, junior guard Alex Blink, is averaging 10 points a contest.
“I would label them dangerous,” Andrews said. “They’re going to space the floor. They’re going to make you come out and guard them. And they’re doing a little more in the full court this year than they’ve done in the past.
“This should help us down the road,” he added. “You’ve got to go through disciplined, halfcourt teams in the tournament.”
Springboro is shooting 55.1 percent as a team, keyed by 6-foot-10 junior center Maverick Morgan (23.5 ppg, 10.5 rpg) and junior point guard Ryan Murray (14.3 ppg, 4.8 apg).
“Our kids have done a great job of playing together and getting the ball where we want to get the ball,” Holtrey said.
Meadowdale actually lost its last game, a 66-42 decision against Dayton Thurgood Marshall, but gained a forfeit win because of an ineligible player.
Senior forward Odis Shine is averaging about 14 points and eight rebounds per game. Lions coach Felix Turner said his team doesn’t have great size.
“Our tallest guy is probably 6-3,” he added. “We’re very fast, athletic, pretty versatile. We want to use our speed when it’s to our advantage. I’m concerned with how we’re going to match up with Springboro in a halfcourt set.”
