MONROE — In a game that featured very few offensive fires, Connor Ridge managed to light one Tuesday night.
The senior’s 3-pointer to end the first half gave Fenwick High School’s boys basketball team a much-needed boost heading into the locker room at Monroe, and the Falcons responded with 12 straight points to start the third quarter.
It all added up to a 38-25 victory for Fenwick, which pushed its record to 6-5.
“When it left my hand, I just said, ‘That’s in, let’s go to the second half,’ ” Ridge said of the Falcons’ only trey. “It did give us a lift. The pace of the game picked up after that.”
Fenwick led 17-13 at the break, and Frank Catrine tallied eight of his 17 points during the 12-0 surge that kicked off the third stanza.
“Fenwick is good,” Hornets coach Casey Popplewell said. “They’re physical, a typical (Greater Catholic League) team, and we didn’t answer that very well in the third quarter.”
Fenwick coach Pat Kreke is heartened by his squad’s defensive consistency and troubled by the dearth of points.
“Offensively, we’re just anemic,” Kreke said. “We’re putting more and more emphasis on it in practice and doing less and less of what we’re practicing in games.
“I know we’ve got some intelligent kids, but we’re usually in the wrong position to start plays,” he added. “We practice offense real well. It’s just not carrying over into games.”
Nick Durham had eight points and Ridge added seven for the Falcons, who only had six turnovers. Catrine paced the board effort with six caroms.
Chris Sloneker’s 10 points and seven rebounds led the Hornets (3-10). They lost their leading scorer, Marc Hunt, to a knee injury in December.
“We want to limit possessions,” Popplewell said. “That makes the possessions we get even more valuable, and we didn’t take advantage of them tonight.
“I can’t complain about our defense,” he continued. “Thirty-eight points should win you a game or get you darn close.”
Ridge said Monroe’s tenacity played a big role in Fenwick’s struggle to find a rhythm.
“They weren’t a pushover team,” Ridge said. “They made us work and really stuck with it until the end, and I applaud them for it.”
Both teams will be on the road Friday, the Falcons vs. Dayton Carroll and the Hornets vs. Valley View.
