HAMILTON — Badin High School boys basketball coach Nick Argentati’s message to his squad was simple when he addressed them at the first-quarter break.

Unfortunately for the visiting Edgewood Cougars, the execution of the message was just as simple.

Badin stormed away from a 14-all first quarter deadlock, holding the Cougars scoreless in the second period on its way to a 56-29
nonleague win Thursday night at Mulcahey Gym.

“We didn’t do anything tactically,”Argentati said of his message. “I told them to focus and do what we are supposed to do. I don’t know if we weren’t playing hard in the first quarter, but our focus had to be better.”

Morgan Reynolds poured in a game high 23 points and snared 12 boards, Joe Marot chipped in 10 points while Jimmy Kes and Cameron Mohr each had five assists for the Rams, who improved to 5-2.

The Cougars came out hot early, hitting 7-of-11 from the floor in the first quarter to forge the deadlock, but the scoreless second, coupled with 9 turnovers, proved to much to overcome.

Reynolds had eight points in the second as the Rams built a 27-14 halftime lead.

“Badin picked up their intensity, became a lot more physical,” Edgewood coach Aaron Horne said of his team’s second-quarter drought.

“We struggle to hit shots as it is and when you turn it over and not even get shots, it makes it more difficult. We showed we can compete but now we have to do it for the entire game.”

After the hot start, the Cougars only hit 5-of-24 from the field the rest of the way, including 0-for-11 from beyond the arc, while turning it over 24 times.

The Cougars, who fell to 0-6, were led by Cody Hall’s 11 points and six rebounds.

“I like where we are at,” Argentati said. “We have eight seniors so it shouldn’t take until mid-January to get better. We can shoot better but they have to understand when the outside shot isn’t falling, they have to attack the basket. Tonight we did a better job of attacking the basket.”

The Rams, who hit 23-of-48 from the field, play Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy at home on Tuesday. The Cougars host Monroe that same night.
