CAMDEN — The Preble Shawnee High School boys basketball team grabbed a 22-8 first-quarter lead and never looked back Tuesday night in an 80-49 win over visiting New Miami.
Junior David Willoughby scored 18 points to lead five players in double figures for the Arrows (5-6).
Jake Adams and Christian Letner had 12 points apiece, Brian Kettring had 11 and Matt Buell added 10.
“I’m in my second year and the year before I came, there were only seven players,” New Miami coach Grady Morris said.
“Last year I got the numbers up and this year we are playing a varsity and reserve schedule and an abbreviated freshman schedule. We’re taking baby steps.”
Tuesday’s game was the third in five days for the Vikings, and that took its toll, Morris said.
Shawnee was in a similar situation, with four games in seven days and a contest against league-leading Waynesville coming Friday.
“That’s a big game,” Preble Shawnee coach Andrew Gerken said of the coming game at Waynesville.
“The kids were tired, but they had to stay focused. I tried some new things, new lineups, different looks.”
Seniors Nick Hayes and Steven Rogers scored 10 points each to lead the Vikings (1-11).
“Preble Shawnee is well coached,” Morris said. “It is a learning process for us. We’re going step by step. We take it quarter by quarter. We’ll keep working hard. I’m happy the numbers are up.”
The Arrows extended their lead to 48-23 at halftime and 66-37 at the third stop.
“The score was lopsided, but I wanted them to stay focused in the fourth quarter,” Gerken said.
“New Miami played hard. As a coach, I like the way the kids played hard.
“We (both teams) need to do what the kids need to prepare for the rest of the season.”
Austin Morgan added nine points for New Miami, which returns to Miami Valley Conference play Friday night at St. Bernard.
