The Competitive Balance Committee lives for another decision.

This was the group headed by the Ohio High School Athletic Association last year. Last week it was decided to continue to study the disproportional amount of state championships won by private schools compared to public schools.

The committee also addressed a proposed referendum that would separate public and private schools in OHSAA tournaments.

The CBC was established in January 2010 after another study was presented to the OHSAA. That study concluded that a majority of titles were being won by nonpublic schools, even though those programs comprised just 17 percent of Ohio’s high schools.

A referendum was narrowly voted down by membership principals last spring. The proposal addressed school boundary, socioeconomic and tradition factors that would determine school divisions.

The CBC will provide an update to the OHSAA Board of Directors at their Feb. 15 meeting.

“It is possible a referendum issue dealing with competitive balance could be placed on the ballot for the May voting by the membership,” Commissioner Dr. Dan Ross said in a statement.

It’s a draw: The girls basketball tournament draw was last Sunday. This Sunday, it’s the boys turn.

Wright State University (Divisions I-IV) and Piqua High School (others in Divisions II and IV) will be the meeting locales for coaches. The postseason begins on Friday, Feb. 24.

Seeding for Divisions I and II promises to be intriguing, and for different reasons. No area boys team has been untouchable in D-I.

Beavercreek, Northmont and Springboro all have spent time in the No. 1 spot of the DDN ratings. Beavercreek has split with Northmont, beaten Springboro and lost to Middletown. Springboro has beaten Middletown.

All district finals will be at UD Arena.
