Wilmington College junior Braden McMonigle’s track season ended in the NCAA Division III championships for the third straight year.
The Monroe High School graduate and two-time All-American in the high jump cleared the opening height of 6 feet, 5 inches, but went out at 6-7 to finish tied for 13th.
McMonigle finished eighth at the 2009 outdoor championships and was runner-up at the 2011 indoor national meet.
Men’s tennis
• University of the Cumberlands senior Steffan Crowe (Carlisle) recently received one of the school’s highest honors.
Crowe was selected to be inducted into the J.T. Vallandingham Scholastic Honor Society, which was established in 1961 and renamed in honor of Dr. Vallandingham in 1964.
The society recognizes students who have exemplified academic excellence throughout their college careers.
Crowe also was recently named a Daktronics-NAIA men’s tennis scholar athlete.
Women’s track
• University of Rio Grande junior middle distance runner Cassie Mattia (Fenwick) ran well, but was not able to advance to the semifinals of the women’s 800-meter run at the NAIA Outdoor National Championships on Friday.
Mattia finished eighth in her heat with a season-best time of 2 minutes, 15.63 seconds. She missed eclipsing the Rio Grande outdoor record by .43 seconds.
• Sophomore Emily Amburgey (Preble Shawnee) represented Ohio Wesleyan at the NCAA Division III championship meet on Saturday.
She cleared 5 feet, 33/4 inches in the high jump to finish tied for 17th place in the final standings.
Men’s swimming
• Chris Rudolf (Fenwick) has been named to the Horizon League All-Academic team for Valparaiso University.
Rudolf competed in every freestyle event for the Crusaders, as well as the 100-yard breaststroke and 100 butterfly.
Baseball
• University of Dayton sophomore Brian Blasik (Valley View) stole his 23rd base of the season in an Atlantic 10 tournament game on Friday.
The mark tied the Flyers single-season record set in 1999 by Jake Long.
The Flyers lost the game 10-3, and Blasik’s second season ended with him leading the team in home runs (six), triples (five) and stolen bases (23).
He also sported a .369 average, with 37 RBIs, 44 runs scored and 11 doubles.
Softball
• Capital University senior Jen Reimer (Edgewood) earned academic and athletic honors recently from the Ohio Athletic Conference.
Reimer was the only Crusader to receive Academic All-OAC honors.
She also received OAC honorable mention for softball, where she recorded a .400 batting average with 10 doubles and three home runs.
