MADISON TWP. — The Madison Mohawks snapped a three-game losing streak in convincing fashion on Friday, and both teams set school records along the way.
With the offensive line opening up holes that Mohawks back Dylan Dwyer later said he could’ve driven his soccer mom van through, the Madison offense racked up 375 yards in total offense — and all but seven yards of that came on the ground — in a convincing 46-23 win.
Dwyer finished with 129 yards and four touchdowns.
“My line is great. I’ve got two fast guards in David Schenck and Chris Mills, and they’re the quickest pulling guards I’ve ever played football with. They just lead up the hole and all I do is follow them. The rest is easy,” Dwyer said.
Fellow linemen Brian Morris, John Agnew and Daniel Bolen also helped create those gaping holes.
“Everything went well tonight,” Madison first-year coach Chris Wells said. He was briskly walking to the locker room, after getting a cooler of ice water dumped on him after the game.
“It came down to attitude,” Wells said. “We had three rough weeks in a row, but our guys continued to work hard. We’ve got hurt guys in casts showing up for practice.”
Shawnee coach Greg Stacy said the team’s turnovers on kickoff returns killed the Arrows.
“Those fumbles took any momentum away that we might have,” he said. “We just didn’t play like we wanted to play.”
Madison was solid on the defensive side of the ball, too, led by Kyler Tusing. Agnew, Gage Collins and Dwyer played stout as well.
“Everyone came together as one tonight,” Tusing said. “Like coach told us in the huddle: From the kickoffs, to the defense and the offense, we came tonight as one. Definitely.
“Being a senior, on homecoming, I’ll never forget this night. We played great,” he added.
Oh yeah, those records.
First, Madison’s back-up kicker — quarterback Tre Owens’ sister Tyler Owens — became the first female in school history to score a point when she hit an extra-point attempt late in the game.
Preble Shawnee’s veteran placekicker Dylan Mann launched into a school record as well with a late 42-yard field goal to put his name in the Arrows record books.
Owens and Mann’s points were the final points of the game.
