MADISON TWP. — The honors just keep coming for the Madison High School girls and boys basketball teams.

For the second year in a row, Ally Malott was named the Division III Southwest District girls player of the year, and teammate Lindsay Hoskins was selected to the D-III first team.

Madison’s Rachel Blevins and Brittany Shields received honorable mention.

For the boys, Mark Maloney was named to the D-III boys’ first team, while Matt Houser was selected to the second team. Justin Brunswick and Tyler Dietz received honorable mention.

The Southwest District teams were compiled by a district-wide media panel and released by The Associated Press on Monday, March 8.

“It’s a big honor,” said Malott, who will lead her 24-0 Mohawks into the regional semifinals against Columbus Africentric on Wednesday at Springfield High School. “It wasn’t a goal that I set for myself, but I’m glad to see that all the hard work is paying off.

“Right now, what we’re accomplishing with our team is more important to me,” she added.

Malott is averaging 17.9 points per game.

“It’s very deserving,” Madison girls coach John Rossi Jr. said of Malott. “She’s a once in a lifetime player and you don’t get a chance to coach someone like that often, but she’s an even better person.”

Veteran Fenwick boys basketball coach Pat Kreke was honored as the D-II boys coach of the year.

After just 14 wins combined in the last three seasons, he guided his Falcons to a 16-5 record this year which included a share of the Greater Catholic League North Division title.

“It’s a great honor, but you’re only as good as your team,” Kreke said. “These kids did a nice job bringing our program back to respectability and I am so proud of them.”

Fenwick also was represented by junior Brent Langhorne, who was selected to the D-II boys second team, and junior Chelsea Farrell, who was named to the D-III girls third team.

Other area boys’ players earning district recognition were Preble Shawnee’s Will Pope and Dylan Brown. Pope was named to the D-III first team, while Brown was on the third team. Valley View’s Ricky Denny was named to the third team in D-II and Middletown Christian’s Daniel Balsbaugh was named to the third team in D-IV.

On the girls side, Franklin’s Brandi McDaniel was named to the third team in D-II.
